L4D: From Dusk Till Death Poster (WIP)

// May 14th, 2009 // Game Level Design

I’m pleased to announce the upcoming Left4Dead Campaign I’m a creating – “From Dusk Till Death”.

It’s well underway, and today I fancied a break from the SDK to concentrate on the loading screen.

The screen is a bit of a ‘play’ on the awesome 1996 action/horror film ‘From Dusk till Dawn‘ movie poster – starring George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Quentin Tarantino and Cheech Marin to name but a few.

I have some important thoughts on the loading screens used in L4D….

The position of the characters are different on each loading screen, yet the engine can dynamically place the steam names of the players on the correct character for each steam player.

After delving around considerably in the .vpk’s to see if there is an extra ’script’ that accompanies the loading screen .vtf (apart from the .vmt) – I was left with no choice but to email Jess Cliffe at Valve to see if he could point me in the right direction as to how they achieve the correct steam name placement regardless of how the characters are ordered on the loading screen.

Anyways, here’s a WIP version of the loading screen (subject to the odd edit) that I’ll use in ‘From Dusk Till Death’.
